When I was younger I wished for long hair that would rival any fairytale princess. I wanted long, flowing locks cascading past my shoulders and chest, hair that I could plait and style and let blow in the wind. As an adult, not much has changed. Female Celebs and TV presenters alike always seem to have one thing in common and that is long, shiny, healthy looking hair. It’s safe to admit that most of us probably have a Pinterest board or two with hair inspiration and often these styles are fairytale-esque. Selena Gomez was always someone whose style I admired and that is why I found her interview last year with Lilly Singh where she admitted that her hair was “full of secrets” i.e. hair extensions, so refreshing. No longer do we have to wait years for our hair to grow – just fake it!
As my curiosity about hair extensions grew I decided to interview a salon who is a certified stylist of Great Lengths – a leading brand of hair extensions. City Wax, my local salon, was more than happy to discuss everything I wanted to know.
Can you tell me a little bit about Great Lengths?

With real hair you can straighten and curl it without any issues (as long as you are still being careful not to overdo it, like you would with your own hair).
How long do they last?
Extensions can last anywhere between 2 and 5 months depending on the type, your own hair and how you look after them. Leaving them in longer can result in damage as your hair will naturally shed up to 50 to 100 hairs per day. This will mean the amount of hair left holding the extension will reduce over time so can cause breakage if it is left longer than the recommended time. People often want them to last as long as possible but they don’t realise that this is what can result in damage to your own hair.
What lengths do you use?
We generally work with 20 inch strands which we find are generally as long as any of our clients want – they can always be trimmed up then afterwards to your preferred length.
Do extensions damage your own hair and is it safe to get extensions if you have fine hair?
Extensions can cause damage to the hair if you do not follow the care instructions given and if they are left in longer than the recommended period. Timely removal of extensions is important because you naturally shed between 50 and 100 hairs per day. Because of this natural process, the bunch of hair that is gathered to create the bond with each extension will gradually become weaker as some of them shed. The extension is then resting on this weaker bunch of hair and if left over long periods of time that can cause breakage. Damage can be avoided altogether once you take care of your extensions and follow the guidelines given.
If your hair is very fine you may not be suitable for extensions or if your hair breaks easily then it may not be strong enough to hold the extensions.
